10-year-old baseball star dies suddenly after championship game

The community of Linglestown, Pennsylvania, is mourning the loss of 10-year-old Bryson Funk, a talented young baseball player who passed away just a day after leading his team to victory.

On June 11, Bryson pitched the final three innings for the Linglestown Colts, striking out the last batter to secure the championship. The next day, he collapsed and was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

His family later revealed he had myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart, which led to cardiac arrest. The diagnosis has left loved ones devastated and searching for comfort.

Bryson’s best friend, Elias Vilfort, 9, remembered him fondly. “He would literally do a backflip to make a play… He was very funny. He was always in the game. I’m still shocked this happened,” he told CBS 21.

Elias’ mother shared a photo of the boys with a heartfelt message, while Bryson’s father, Todd, wrote, “I’ve lost my only son, my throwing buddy.” He invited Elias to continue playing catch in Bryson’s memory, saying it would help everyone heal.

The Linglestown Baseball Association paid tribute on Facebook, praising Bryson’s hustle, heart, and joy for the game. “He wasn’t just an incredible athlete – he was a teammate, a friend, and a joy to coach.”

Family friend Nicki Brantner launched a GoFundMe to support the grieving family. By June 23, donations had exceeded $47,500 of the $50,000 goal, with supporters recalling Bryson’s vibrant spirit and championship win just before his passing.

Though Bryson was born with other heart conditions, doctors believe they were unrelated to his death. Myocarditis, often caused by viral infections, can progress rapidly and tragically cut lives short. Bryson’s story is a heartbreaking reminder of how precious life is.
